Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia is a condition expressed as an increase in the amount of mammary gland tissue in men. It is usually caused by hormonal imbalances. Gynecomastia can occur in different age groups and for various reasons. Gynecomastia usually occurs on one or both breasts.

The main cause of gynecomastia is hormonal changes. In men, (male hormone) and estrogen (female hormone) levels must be balanced. Hormonal imbalances can lead to increased or decreased levels of estrogen, causing gynecomastia. Factors such as adolescence, aging, use of hormonal drugs (such as anabolic), obesity, liver or kidney diseases, thyroid problems, tumors, drug side effects may increase the risk of gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is not linked to breast cancer. It is rare for men to get breast cancer.

Symptoms

Gynecomastia can be a side effect of some medications, such as antidepressants, antibiotics, chemotherapy, prostate cancer drugs, ulcer or cardiovascular drugs. Illegal drugs such as anabolics can also cause gynecomastia.

Some diseases and medical conditions can also cause gynecomastia. These include:

Liver diseases Kidney disease Lung cancer Testicular cancer Tumors of the adrenal glands or pituitary gland Certain conditions in which a baby is born (congenital disorders) Thyroid disorders Injury or trauma obesity Newborn babies may have a short-term form of gynecomastia. This is usually because the mother’s estrogen remains in the baby’s blood for some time after birth.

Gynecomastia is not linked to breast cancer. It is rare for men to get breast cancer.

Surgery Scars

Any surgical treatment to correct gynecomastia will require incisions. While most incision lines are hidden within the natural contours, some may be visible and are a necessary consequence of male breast reduction surgery. All gynecomastia surgery scars are permanent, although some scars may be hidden within the natural contours of the breast.
Gynecomastia Diagnosis

It can be diagnosed using medical history evaluation, physical examination, blood tests, or imaging methods (such as breast ultrasound or mammography). While gynecomastia may resolve spontaneously, in other cases medication or surgical intervention may be required.

Surgery Scars

Surgical treatment to correct gynecomastia will require an incision. While most incision lines are hidden within natural contours, some may be visible. The size, location and prominence of scars may vary from individual to individual. The scars fade and heal over time, but they do not disappear completely. Each individual’s body structure and healing process is different, so how the scars will appear may vary from person to person. It is important to talk to your doctor in detail about the scars before and after surgery.

Results

Gynecomastia surgery results are seen immediately. Over time, post-operative swelling will resolve and the incision lines will disappear. Satisfaction with your new image should continue to increase as you recover from surgery. It may take up to 3-6 months to reach the final results of your gynecomastia surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does exercise improve man’s breasts?

Exercise can reduce excess fat stored in the chest; however, it has no effect on the dense glandular tissue caused by gynecomastia. Some men are horrified to find that their breasts don’t get smaller no matter how hard or how often they exercise.

How is gynecomastia treated?

The only way to reverse gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery. During surgery, the surgeon uses a combination of liposuction and excision techniques to remove fat and glandular tissue. Excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is stretched over the chest. The nipple-areolar complex can be reduced and positioned above the breast if necessary.

How long does it take to recover from male breast reduction surgery?

Recovery varies by patient and the extent of their procedure. Most patients return to work and socialization after about a week. Light exercise can be resumed for two weeks after surgery and more strenuous activities can be resumed for four to six weeks after surgery.

Will there be any visible scars after the surgery?

As long as the surgeon makes the incisions carefully and in the natural folds of the skin, the incision lines should fade significantly after surgery.

Can man breasts grow back after surgery?

In most cases, the results of gynecomastia surgery are long-term. However, weight gain, medication use and hormone fluctuations may cause gynecomastia to recur.

What are the benefits of gynecomastia surgery?

In addition to improving breast appearance, gynecomastia surgery can also lead to increased self-confidence and sexual satisfaction. Many men have new motivation to exercise and maintain their results.

What are the risks of gynecomastia surgery?

As with every surgical procedure, gynecomastia surgery also involves risks. These risks include infection, bleeding, anesthesia reactions, wound healing problems, and sensory changes. A detailed preoperative evaluation and accurate surgical planning help minimize these risks.
