Surgeries for the lower and upper eyelids are generally known as eyelid aesthetics or blepharoplasty. These surgeries are performed to correct problems such as sagging, loosening or fat accumulation around the eyes.

During surgical eyelid aesthetic surgery, in addition to removing the eyelid skin, xanthelasma (eyelid oil glands) treatment is performed, excess upper eyelid herniated oil glands are removed, thickening muscles are removed and thinned, the eye corner is lifted up, almond eye, fox eye ( fox eye). Since cantoplasty , also known as cantoplasty, can be performed from the same incision line with methods such as eyebrow lift, they can be combined to create an eyelid shape that the patients will be happy with.

Upper Eyelids Surgery (Upper Blepharoplasty ):

  • Sagging or loosening of the upper eyelids can cause the eyes to look tired or teary. Upper blepharoplasty surgery removes this excess skin and fatty tissue, allowing the eyelids to have a younger and fresher appearance.
  • The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision on the eyelid along the natural fold line and removes any excess skin, fat, or muscle tissue. The incisions are then carefully closed.
  • The healing process usually takes several weeks. There may be swelling, bruising and mild pain for the first few days. Swelling and bruises on the eyelids decrease over time, and scars usually fade during the healing process.

Lower Eyelids Surgery (Lower Blepharoplasty ):

  • Problems such as sagging, bagging or fat accumulation in the lower eyelids can cause the eye area to look old or tired. Lower blepharoplasty surgery corrects these problems and provides a more youthful and dynamic appearance.
  • Surgeries for the lower eyelids are generally performed with two different techniques. One of these is to make the incision from the inner edge of the eyelid ( transconjunctival technique). The other method is to make an incision along the lower lash line.
  • The surgery can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. The surgeon removes or reshapes excess skin, fat, or muscle tissue from the lower eyelid. The incisions are closed and the healing process begins.
  • The healing process may take several weeks. There may be swelling, bruising and mild discomfort in the first days. The swelling on the eyelid decreases over time and the scars fade during the healing process.

How is eyelid aesthetic surgery performed after you decide to have eyelid surgery? What kind of process awaits me?

1 week before the surgery: Your doctor recommends that you stop taking blood thinners and, if necessary, switch to blood thinners such as low molecular weight
heparin , which the relevant branch doctor (cardiologist, neurologist, etc. ) recommends before the surgery. 1 day before the surgery: The information specified in the preoperative consent form is reviewed. The patient’s expectations are listened to: Removal of sagging eyelid skin, increased visual field, obtaining a better aesthetic result. If the surgery will be performed in the hospital or under general anesthesia, blood tests, ECG and other necessary tests will be performed before the surgery.
On the day of surgery:
1) Photo (the patient’s pre-operative condition is determined by taking a photo of the patient’s previous state.
2) Signing the consent forms3) Drawing before the surgery4) Checking that the pre-operative payments have been made5) If the surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, the Anesthesiologist Doctor’s examination is performed respectively. Approximately 30 minutes before the surgery, the patient is taken to the operating room. Here, after all equipment, devices and personnel are checked, the patient is monitored as the doctor deems appropriate and the procedure begins. Monitoring means seeing basic life values such as pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation (SPO2). If the patient will be operated under general anesthesia , general anesthesia drugs are administered to the patient, and an oxygen mask is placed close to his face. After this stage, the standard progresses. To reduce bleeding, whether general or local, local anesthetic drugs containing epinephrine are injected with fine-tipped needles into the surgical areas drawn with a pencil before the surgery. Although isolated upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia, combined surgeries such as lower eyelid blepharoplasty , eyebrow lift and mid-face lift are performed more comfortably under general anesthesia. Then, the excess skin marked before the surgery is removed, the bleeding areas are cauterized (cauterized), and after the bleeding is stopped, the two ends of the cut skin are stitched together. The operation is terminated after appropriate dressing is made. If you are having surgery on your upper and lower eyelids, the surgeon usually works on your upper eyelids first. He makes an incision in the crease of the eyelid, removes excess skin, muscle, and possibly fat, and closes the incision. In the lower eyelid, the surgeon makes an incision just below the lashes, in the natural crease of your eye, or inside the lower eyelid. He or she removes excess fat, muscle, and sagging skin or repositions the skin and closes the incision. If your upper eyelid droops to cover your pupil ( ptosis ), your surgeon may lift the eyelid with stitches that will suspend and support your upper eyelid muscles. This is called ptosis surgery. Upper eyelid surgery alone takes approximately 1-2 hours. Combined surgeries such as a brow lift or midface lift may take longer. If the surgery was performed under general anesthesia, discharge will be done 1 day later, and if it was performed under local anesthesia, discharge will be done 1-2 hours later. Only upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery can be performed in a clinic under local (numbing) anesthesia, but we recommend that it be performed in a hospital setting and under general anesthesia in combinations such as eyebrow lift or lower eyelid surgery.
2 days after surgery: During this period, the bruises around the eyes become more visible and the skin continues to swell and edema . This process continues to worsen until the 3rd day on average. Edema begins to subside approximately after the 3rd day. In the first 48 hours, if you have blood pressure, it is very important to keep your blood pressure low, apply cold compress (ice), keep your head above the bed level, avoid sudden movements – movements and emotional states that will increase the pulse / blood pressure .
During the healing period , it takes approximately 1-2 weeks for the bruises to disappear and 4-6 weeks for the edema to disappear. After eyelid surgery, your doctor will check you every 2-3 days for the first week. He will show you how to dress the eyelid stitches (apply antibiotic cream). If you have additional dressings and combined surgeries, he will also change the dressings and show you. You will be asked to use antibiotics and painkiller tablets for about 5 days after the surgery. You will be asked to apply antibiotic eye drops and creams to your eyelids for about 10 days after the surgery. If any of these medications causes allergies or unexpected effects, consult your doctor. You can leave Istanbul after 5-6 days if there are no complications after the surgery . You can reach the doctor’s assistant from wherever you are with the WhatsApp number given to you and ask for information that you can’t remember. At regular intervals, the doctor’s assistant may ask you to take a photo of your wound to show to the doctor. Surgery scars will change within months. The skin color, which is purple in the first month, may later change to different colors such as pink and brown tones. It takes between 1-1.5 years for the scar of
any skin incision on the body to mature and take its final form. The success of eyelid surgery treatment is significantly related to postoperative care. Follow your doctor’s recommendations strictly to ensure that your post-operative bruises disappear quickly, edema disappears quickly, and your scars heal as little as possible. The use of cigarettes and other tobacco products after surgery prolongs the healing process, impairs wound healing and causes more scarring. Therefore, even if it cannot be left out, we recommend that it be minimized.

Post-Operative Recommendations

Before you start enjoying your
new appearance , please listen to some of our suggestions that will make the post-operative process easier. Bruising: Having lower blood pressure during and for 1 day after eyelid surgery is associated with less bruising and less edema. Therefore, if you are using blood pressure medication, be sure to tell your doctor and find out at what time it should be used on the day of surgery. Do not disuse it .
Massage with herbal gels ( such as arn **a .. ) after surgery can help bruises and edema heal quickly. Consult your doctor about how sensitive your stitches are and when you should start the massage.
Infection: Getting an infection after eyelid surgery seriously damages the scar. To prevent this, your doctor will give you tablets, drops and cream antibiotics that are applied orally and locally to the suture line. Be sure to use them as recommended for the recommended duration. Allergy: Things such as stitches, medicines, disinfectants, dressing materials used during surgery may cause allergic reactions (redness, swelling, watering) in some people. etc. ) can cause. In such complications, the healing process may take longer. If you have a known allergy, be sure to tell your doctor before the procedure. Wound healing: There are unchangeable (
such as age, gender, chronic diseases, etc. ) and modifiable (nutrition, exercise, massage, smoking etc.) factors that determine the rate of wound healing after surgery . The modifiable ones of these are mechanisms that will result in more oxygen and nutrients coming to the wound. For example, walking after surgery increases blood circulation and accelerates wound healing. Or smoking after surgery prevents oxygen transport as carbon monoxide binds red blood cells and prolongs wound healing.
Listening to these and similar suggestions of your doctor will ensure that the surgery process is easier and faster and you get better results. Our patients living outside the city can ask their questions via video conference, phone, WhatsApp or email , and if necessary, a conference call can be made with the doctor and pre-operative surgery. Detailed information can be given.
